Education

The National Geospatial Development Center has an eye on education. The infiltration/runoff conservation model below is a modification of models used for many years to illustrate management effects on erosion.

Conservation Model

The infiltration/runoff model compares agricultural management systems by showing runoff and infiltration from undisturbed surface soil samples.

The runoff water from conventionally tilled soils tends to have more sediment in it than that of soils from no-till/conservation planted fields due to the lower organic matter content and fewer organic glues present in the soil.

During times of the year when macropores (large holes) in the soil are open, there is more infiltration into a less disturbed soil. Earthworms and other soil organisms continually aerate the soil by creating large and small holes for air and water to travel into and through the soil.
